UK Upper Tribunal upholds ICO case against Clearview AI

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office announced that its appeal against the decision in its case against Clearview AI Inc. was upheld by the Upper Tribunal. Clearview, which scraped public images and built a large facial-recognition database, had argued that it was outside the UK's jurisdiction.

The tribunal confirmed that UK law applies and that global firms processing biometric data of UK individuals must meet domestic transparency and accountability standards. Another reason this case is under UK jurisdiction is that local law enforcement agencies use the company’s services. This ruling is a clear example of the regulator’s authority and could help shape how biometric data is processed.
