Liquid Telecom fined in Kenya
Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) fined Liquid Telecommunications Kenya Ltd Sh700,000 due to unlawful data privacy practices conducted without the required consent. An individual complaint to the ODCP began the process that led to this substantial fine, reminding businesses that a single data privacy violation could have severe implications.
The ODPC also found that when the complainant requested that his data be erased, Liquid did not act within a reasonable timeframe. In fact, the data remained accessible to the company a year after the request was first submitted. The right to erasure is part of Kenya’s Data Protection Act, 2019 framework.
