Italy fines OpenAI €15 million for privacy violations
New tech leaders have already caught the eye of privacy regulators. The Italian Data Protection Authority fined OpenAI €15 million for failing to comply with regulation in its processing of personal data used by ChatGPT.
The authority stated that the service processed information to train its generative AI models, violating transparency requirements in the process. Additional claims involve failing to comply with age verification requirements intended to prevent children under the age of 13 from accessing inappropriate content.
In addition to the fine, OpenAI will launch a campaign in Italy, explaining to local users how ChatGPT collects data and raising their awareness of data privacy issues arising from this conduct. This interesting penalty demonstrates a uniquely creative use of tech leaders’ platform reach for relevant educational purposes that promote online privacy goals.
