Ireland appoints former tech-industry lobbyist to Data Protection
Ireland recently announced the appointment of a former technology-industry lobbyist to the Data Protection Commission (DPC). Niamh Sweeney, the former head of public policy at Meta, will serve as the third DPC commissioner, a move that has prompted debate over regulatory independence.
Some expressed concern that, given Ireland’s prominent position as a headquarters for major tech firms, the appointment may influence the country's regulatory tone and enforcement dynamics. Dozens of civil society organisations have approached the European Commission, expressing their concern and requesting a review of this appointment. In response, the Commission stated that it does not influence this type of decision.
