CPPA board moves CRPA rule-making process forward

In late May, 2022, the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) released a draft for the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). The draft covered only a few of the 22 regulatory topics the CPPA set out to address, including personal data collection & processing restrictions, privacy notice requirements, and more. On June 8, the Agency held a board meeting,  discussed proposed regulations, and reached “an incredible milestone”, voting to begin the CPRA rulemaking process. The regulations are unlikely to be finished by the initial July 1 deadline.

Primary goals of the regulations

  1. To update existing CPRA amendments to the CCPA, provide harmonization and clarity to minimize any confusion;
  2. To operationalize the existing CPRA amendments, so businesses will have a better idea on how to implement policies and procedures to comply with the law; and
  3. To reorganize and consolidate certain aspects of the law, making it more digestible.
