Amnesty International Kenya’s data rights study and guidelines

Amnesty International Kenya released a comprehensive study assessing public awareness of Kenya’s Data Protection Act, followed by guidelines for civil society organisations to improve data handling and accountability.

The research found limited knowledge of privacy rights among rural and marginalized communities and called for stronger institutional oversight. The guidelines, created together with the Data Privacy and Governance Society of Kenya, provide practical privacy frameworks. While not an enforcement action, the initiative signals a shift toward rights-based approaches to data governance in emerging markets. It also highlights the importance of provisioning civil society organizations with the right tools and practices.
